Mustard - why am I craving Mustard?

August 2, 2007

Rosemary asked me this question:

I understand that different cravings can be a sign of deficiencies in our bodies; i.e. chewing ice = iron deficiency. I’m desperately trying to uncover any such message that might be associated with my recent, and very strong mustard cravings. I am finding nothing on the subject of mustard. Can you help? Thank you.

Rosemary — be sure to check out the details in the link I provide below.

Since mustard is such a great benefit for digestion, it is possible your body actually knows that.  I hope my article helps you uncover the reasons for your strong craving for mustard.

Mustard has incredible properties.  I am particularly interested in the fact that mustard helps with digestion, and can also speed up metabolism.  This is wonderful news for anyone who is looking for natural ways to help with weight loss.  Of course, it is important to use the mustard as close to nature as possible, so look for healthy mustard in your health food store.

I have the privilege of being a guest writer for the Family Food Network and you can find my recent article on Mustard here: Mustard for Health: Speed Up Your Metabolism and Improve Digestion

I love mustard! Too bad I can’t have it right now since I’m back on my strict diet again. :( I used to dip plain chips in mustard! Pretty weird, I know! lol

I have craved mustard before, but I think it was the vinegar in prepared mustard that did the trick for me. When I was pregnant I especially wanted vinegary foods. Probably a signal for an additional need for calcium, no?

    Hi Margarita!
Here are benefits of Mustard - maybe your body is craving some essential minerals.

Mustard seeds are a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, protein, selenium and zinc.

Selenium is a nutrient that has been shown to help reduce asthma, arthritis and certain cancers. Magnesium also reduces asthma and lowers blood pressure. The effects of mustard are currently being studied for menopausal women and on migraine attacks.

    Hope this helps you!
