</script></div><p>Today&#8217;s world is inundated with sugar. Most quick foods that fit into our hectic lifestyles have sugars. Simple sugars, refined sugars, hidden sugars, and even sugars that don&#8217;t look like sugars. Enough of the sweet stuff! Our ancestors didn&#8217;t have processed foods and they didn&#8217;t have a lot of health problems that plague today&#8217;s society. Sugar addiction is real and sugar addiction is dangerous. It is time to get back to eating healthy, natural foods.  Recommended &#8212; <strong><a href="http://www.cravingsecrets.com" target="_blank">Craving Secrets</a></strong></p>
<p><strong>Two Types of Sugar &#8211; Complex and Refined (Simple)</strong></p>
<p>There are two types of sugar &#8211; complex and refined. Complex sugars are made up of three or more sugar molecules linked together. They take more energy for the body to break down. Complex sugar is found in whole grain products, oatmeal, brown rice and root vegetables. These sugars are good for you in moderation.</p>
<p>Simple sugars mostly contain refined sugar which is not a food at all. Refined sugar is a manufactured chemical added to foods. Natural simple sugars like honey and fruits, can be eaten in moderation with no adverse effects, but refined sugar is made by taking a natural food, chemically processing it, then boiling it, which destroys all vitamins and nutrients. As many as 64 vitamins and other nutrients are destroyed in this process. All liquid is removed through evaporation and a centrifuge machine, then the crystals are bleached white with animal bones such as pork or beef.</p>
<p><strong>Simple Sugar in Vitamins, Toothpaste, Lip Gloss, Lickable Stamps, Laxatives, Cough Medicines</strong></p>
<p>Many times manufacturers and food companies will add refined sugar to improve the taste of the item. <p>Our <a href="http://thecravingscoach.com/blog/checklist-7-harmful-effects-of-sugar/" target="_blank">Sugar Cravings</a> start at a very young age.  I am as guilty as anyone, even knowing about health and nutrition for so many years.  I know how hard it was to keep my children from eating the unhealthy, sugar-laden, sweet, tempting Halloween treats.</p>
<p><strong>Harmful Effects of Sugar</strong></p>
<p>Studies show that children eat 20 to 40 teaspoons on Halloween night alone!!!  That is not counting what happens for days and even weeks afterwards, with that huge stash of &#8220;white death&#8221; (another name for sugar!)</p>
<p>Last Halloween my friend Angela Wills told me that her 5-year-old son, Hayden, was not planning to go out for Halloween or eat any candy or sugar.  I had the privilege of interviewing Hayden &#8211; I think you will find it fun to listen to Hayden here:</p>

<p>I haven&#8217;t had a chance to ask Angela if Hayden plans to go trick-or-treating this year, or eat sugar&#8230; but I think that the lessons he learned a year ago will still be a part of his life in the future.</p>
<p>The obesity rates in children are skyrocketing.  Diabetes in children is skyrocketing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it comes to making it sweet, one of the first things that people grab for is the sugar or, if they are trying to lose weight, an artificial sweetener. However, neither of those options are the healthiest ones to choose. There are healthier options.</p>
<p><strong>1.  Stevia</strong></p>
<p>Stevia is a wonderful alternative for sweetening.  Stevia is a herb that is a part of the sunflower family and is commonly known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf, or simply stevia.  It is widely grown for its sweet leaves.  Its extracts have up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar and because it has a negligible effect on blood glucose and is known to enhance glucose tolerance, it is a much better choice than artificial sugars like Aspartame, Nutrasweet, Equal, Splenda, Sucralose, for people who are diabetic.</p>
<p>Stevia in most forms, other than the white powered forms, gives a long even energy and works in the body like a complex carb.  It is important to note that many of the extracts, are processed with alcohol and do not keep the plant properties intact; therefore it is important to pay close attention to how the stevia you may use is processed.</p>
<p>If you are a baker and wonder what you can use as a sweetener that is a healthier alternative, then Rapadura or Sucanat are good choices. They are both natural sugars which have many of the minerals, vitamins and nutritional value still intact.</p>
<p><strong>2. Rapadura</strong></p>
<p>Rapadura is a dried sugarcane juice that is common in Latin American countries, that comes in the form of a brick. It is the perfect unbleached, unrefined sweetener to use in place of refined sugars. And the unique processing of Rapadura gives it a mild, caramel-like flavor which is superb for baking and sweetening food and drinks.</p>
<p><strong>3. Sucanut</strong></p>
<p>Sucanut is a non-refined cane sugar that, unlike white sugar, is a pure dried cane sugar, retains its molasses content. Of all the major sugars derived from sugar cane, Sucanut ranks highest in nutritional value; although, as with most sugars, it is not a significant source of any nutrient apart from carbohydrate.</p>
<p><strong>4.  Agave Nectar</strong></p>
<p>Finally there is Agave Nectar, a sweetener that acts as a complex carb instead of a simple one. It is derived from a plant and due to its fructose content, Agave Nectar is remarkable in that its Glycemic Index (GI) and glycemic load are lower than most, if not all natural sweeteners on the market. This makes it a good alternative to honey as honey has a high GI.  Agave Nectar also naturally contains quantities of Iron, Calcium, Potassium &amp; Magnesium which why it has the color it does.</p>
<p>There are other alternatives such as molasses, honey and maple syrup. However, due to some negative properties such as the fact that they can raise blood sugar quickly, they are not the best choices for a healthy sweetener; although they are still healthier alternatives to refined white sugar.</p>
<p>Refined white sugar, and let me add, most brown sugars, are unhealthy options for cooking, baking, drinking, and all sweetening needs. In order to find the natural sweetener that is best for you, do a taste test and choose the one that fits your needs. You may find it necessary to have two or three of these sweeteners in your home for whatever your food preparation needs are.</p>

<p>Why do we crave sugar?  Humans are born with a sweet tooth. From birth the newborn baby smells and tastes the milk of his mother, which is sweet. As adults it is not different.  We grow up with many cravings for something sweet and naturally can crave sugar.</p>

<p><strong>One Can of Coke has 10 Teaspoons of Sugar</strong></p>
<p>The average North American consumes more than 130 pounds of sugar and related products every year. That may sound impossible but when you consider that one can of Coke has 10 teaspoons of sugar; you see that it is not that hard as the average American also drinks about 1 or 2 sodas per day.</p>
<p>When it comes to refined sugar, the bottom line is that as intoxicating as it may be, it is addictive and there is little room for it in a healthy diet. It is by far more damaging than helpful. It is lethal when ingested because it provides what nutritionists describe as “empty” or “naked” calories.</p>
<p>There are many ways that sugar can harm the body and it would literally take a book to discuss the harm.</p>
<p><strong>How is Refined Sugar Harmful to the Body?</strong></p>
<p>Here are seven ways that this refined sweetener is harmful to the body.</p>
<p><strong>1.  Sugar Depletes Body of Vitamins and Nutrients </strong><br />
Because it depletes the body of vitamins and nutrients, sugar suppresses the immune system, leaving the body little room to defend itself.<br />

2.  Sugar Feeds Cancer Cells</strong><br />
Sugar feeds cancer cells and has been linked with the development of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, rectum, pancreas, biliary tract, lung, gallbladder and stomach.</p>
<p><strong>3.  Sugar Links to Tooth Decay </strong><br />
Sugar has a high acidic content and as a result, it has a direct link to tooth decay and other dental problems.<br />

4.  Sugar Links to Diabetes and Blood Sugar Fluctuations</strong><br />
Refined sugar has a direct affect on your blood sugar levels and is a main cause of diabetes.</p>
<p><strong>5.  Sugar and Obesity</strong><br />
With the zero nutritional value and no fiber content in sugar, it&#8217;s clearly implicated in obesity, which can cause many other illnesses and conditions. .</p>
<p><strong>6.  Sugar and Anxiety Disorders</strong><br />
Sugar can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children and even adults. One of the first things that a person diagnosed with anxiety disorder is told to eliminate is refined sugar.</p>
<p><strong>7.  Sugar and the Aging Process </strong><br />
Another result that stems from the fact that sugar has no nutritional value, is that it accelerates the aging process. In order for a body to remain healthy it must have the necessary vitamins and minerals needed to maintain vigor and energy. Again, sugar is not only void of nutrients, but it also zaps the body of the good stuff that is already there.</p>
<p>All-in-all sugar is the one of the worst substances you can put in your body. However, the fact that there are sweet taste buds on the tongue still leaves the desire for something sweet to be consumed. It makes one wonder what to do if sugar is harmful to the body.</p>
<p>There are so many other alternatives out there to satisfy the sweet tooth. Literally the earth is full of many natural sweet options. Fruit is a wonderful alternative to satisfy your  sweet tooth and you have a bounty to choose from. <strong><a href="http://www.diana2.com/sunnydew.html" target="_blank">As far as sweeteners you can try Stevia</a></strong> or agave nectar. They are both great choices for baking, sweetening tea and whatever you use sugar for.</p>
<p><a href="http://thecravingscoach.com/blog/whats-your-craving/curb-sugar-cravings/" target="_blank"><strong>Sugar is addictive and very damaging to the body.</strong></a> The wisest choice that you can make in deciding what to do about sugar is to simply decide to get it out of your pantry.</p>
