Hi Dorothea - sorry it has taken me so long to respond to you!
Wow - that is interesting! - No mustard is not bad for a 3 1/2 year old, there are many benefits to it as you see here:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Mustard-for-Health---Speed-Up-Your-Metabolism-and-Improve-Digestion&id=718352

However, as with anything, we should have balance - and I'd definitely consult a Nutritionist or Dietitian at some point if the incredible cravings for mustard continue - just to be sure. You can understand that each person is different, and with your nephew it is interesting, and may pass, or there may be nutrients in mustard that he is craving.

Thanks for sharing!

Hello, Diana, here's one for the books, my 3 1/2 year nephew has this craving for mustard. The first thing out of his mouth in the morning is "MUSTARD". Now, we have had all kinds of condiments when we have celebrations that have involved food, and he seemed to attach himself to mustard. Is mustard bad for a 3 1/2 year old? His father is growing very concerned because his son is always asking for mustard. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Margarita!
Here are benefits of Mustard - maybe your body is craving some essential minerals.

Mustard seeds are a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, protein, selenium and zinc.

Selenium is a nutrient that has been shown to help reduce asthma, arthritis and certain cancers. Magnesium also reduces asthma and lowers blood pressure. The effects of mustard are currently being studied for menopausal women and on migraine attacks.

Hope this helps you!

I have craved mustard before, but I think it was the vinegar in prepared mustard that did the trick for me. When I was pregnant I especially wanted vinegary foods. Probably a signal for an additional need for calcium, no?
